Why Senior Tennis Unpacked You Ask?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re just like me: someone who lives and breathes tennis
Mike

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re just like me: someone who lives and breathes tennis, one in the upper age bracket, no matter the weather, and no matter how much ibuprofen it takes to get through the weekend. Whether it’s a USTA league match, a UTR flex showdown, or an age-group tournament, we all share the same passion for chasing that little yellow ball around the court but love it when it’s hit right back to us! Because of that I’m excited to introduce Senior Tennis Unpacked—a place for like-minded players to connect, laugh, learn, and, most importantly, share our love for the game.

It’s easy to think tennis is just about the matches. But it’s about the stories, the camaraderie, and, occasionally, the creative interpretations of the rules (you know who you are). For me, tennis isn’t a hobby or a way to get exercise, so I wanted to create this Substack as an outlet, because tennis is a lifestyle, a community, and sometimes even a therapy session. I play as much as I can: leagues, flex leagues, NTRP tournaments, and age group tournaments. And through every match, win or lose, I’ve realized that what makes tennis truly special isn’t just the competition—it’s the people (OK that’s BS, it’s the competition). Having experiences, from the epic victories to the “WTF-just-happened?” moments are what keeps me coming back for more, and probably you too.

With Senior Tennis Unpacked, I’ll be sharing my thoughts and experiences about the sport we all love. Think of it as a weekly rally of ideas, observations, and maybe a few inside jokes (glad you can’t see me play) that only tennis players would understand. My goal is to create a space where we can talk about everything tennis, from the quirks of league play to the latest rule changes, and even the occasional hot topic in the tennis world. But this isn’t just my platform—it’s ours. I want to hear your stories, opinions, and yes, even your rants about that one match where your opponent took a 10-minute bathroom break during the tiebreaker.

I will be posting on Friday’s, with some bonus tidbits when inspiration strikes in between—because let’s be real, this must fit neatly into my weekly tennis practice and matches. In the future, I plan to bring in voices outside our community, like coaches and tennis experts, to share their insights and help us take our games—and our conversations—to the next level.

At the end of the day, Senior Tennis Unpacked is about connection. While we may all have different paths in this sport—different leagues, skill levels, and favorite post-match snacks—it’s our shared love for tennis that ties us together. So, let’s embrace the fun, the humor, and even the occasional frustrations of this game we can’t seem to quit. I hope you’ll join me in creating a community that’s as passionate about tennis as we are.

I’m Mike Rogers, and yes, I’ve spent more time hacking away at tennis balls than I’d care to admit. Let’s just say my knees and I have seen a few wars (most of them against my own backhand). The truth? You never really reach the finish line in this game. There’s always a new trick to learn, a serve to fix, or a point to chase—even when you swear you only came for the post-match snacks.

Expect a steady mix of practical tips and hilarious lessons, all served with a healthy dose of honesty and laughter. I spotlight wild points, friendly rivalries, and those moments when we’re all just out there hoping our shorts don’t split. My stories come from my journey—and from players who know what it’s like chasing the next win after sixty.
